Plastic Injection Molding Machine

The plastic injection molding machine is an integral equipment piece used to design and custom mold plastic for products.

Plastic is a common material used in the manufacture of components for a variety of consumer products. This can range from plastic boxes to household devices, car parts and a wide range of other products. Plastic is a relatively easy product to fashion into a range of shapes and there are a number of ways in which this can be done. One of the most common is by using a plastic injection molding machine and these can be used to manufacture a range of different plastic products.

Using injection molding to produce plastic components has been around for many years now with the very first plastic injection molding machine being produced as far back as the 1870’s. This was fairly basic compared to the sophisticated machinery in operation today and over the years the technology has been refined such that these days it is one of the most common methods of producing plastic components and products.

The process of injection molding is fairly simple. Plastic is loaded into a heated barrel in the plastic injection molding machine where it is mixed. It is then forced into a mold in the shape of the component being produced. Once the plastic cools it will set in the shape of the mold. Typically a product will be designed by an engineer and the details of this given to a mold maker who will produce and precision machine the mold from metal. The process can be used to create a range of products and typically lends itself well to the production of high volumes of an object. It is used to manufacture products for a wide range of industries including consumer products, automobile, aerospace, toys and plumbing. Products that are produced using plastic injection molding can range from smaller items such as bottle caps to larger components including body panels of cars.

There are a number of manufacturers that produce injection molding machines for use with plastic. These can range in size from smaller micro machines of around 10-20 tons to super large, heavy duty machines of up to 5,000 tons. Sumitomo Plastics Machinery is one of these and they manufacture machines from around 10 tons to around 600 tons. Another is Husky which produces machines up to in excess of 1,000 tons. Other manufacturers that produce plastic injection molding machine models for sale include Hettinga, MPM and Toshiba Machine.

The cost of a plastic injection molding machine will largely come down to the size. Smaller machines such as the MPM Model 55E can cost around $30,000 to purchase although for the super large machines the price can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Injection molding is a relatively simple process which can be used to produce a wide range of plastic components and products. This is done using a plastic injection molding machine and these are available in a variety of sizes to suit the products being produced. If you are considering purchasing one of these there are a number of companies that manufacture them. With both new and used machinery available on the market this provides the consumer with a wide variety of choice.
